Improved search engine rank is difficult enough to obtain without you having to trawl through all that has been written about Google Page Rank in order to find the truth. There are many misconceptions about Page Rank, and Part 2 of this article dispels the most common of them, the first being that Yahoo and MSN have their own version.

In fact this is not so. Yahoo had a beta version of a ‘Web Rank’ visible for a while, ranking complete websites, but it is now offline. MSN has no equivalent as far I can ascertain. The term ‘PageRank’ is a trade mark of Google, which is why I refer to it as Page Rank and not PageRank. A small difference, but a significant one.

If you are one of those that believe that the more links you can get to your website the better, then you are wrong. When Google started the Page Rank frenzy by putting that little green bar on their toolbar, they didn’t realize the consequences of what they were doing. People fought to get as many links to their website as possible, irrespective of the nature of the websites to which they were linking.

That is misconception Number 2. You do not link to websites, you link to web pages, or should I say, you get links back from web pages, not websites. It is, after all, the link back that counts isn’t it? The link away from your site doesn’t count. Wrong! Misconception Number 3. The link to your web page counts no more than the link away from your web page. In fact, it could count less. You could lose out in the reciprocal linking stakes if your web page is worth more than the other person’s.

Let’s dispel that misconception right now. When you receive a link from a web page (not web site) you get a proportion of the Google Page Rank of that web page that depends on the total number of links leaving that page. When you provide a link to another web page, you give away a proportion of your Page Rank that depends on the number of other links leaving your web page.

The Page Rank of the website you get a link from is irrelevant, since that is generally the rank of the Home Page. You will likely find that all these great links you think you have from PR 7 or 8 websites are from a links page that has a PR of ZERO! So you get zilch for the deal. If you are providing them with a link from a page on your site even of PR 1, then you lose! Most people fail to understand that.

No incoming link can have a negative effect on your PR. It can have a zero effect, but not negative. However, if you have an incoming link with zero effect, and an outgoing reciprocal link with a positive effect to the target page, then you will effectively lose PR through the deal. Every web page starts with a PR of 1, and so has that single PR to share amongst other pages to which it is linked. The more incoming links it has, the higher PR it can have to share out.

If your page has a PR of 4 and has three links leaving it, each gets twice the number of PR votes than if 6 links leave it. Your page with a PR of 4 has to get a similar number of PR votes incoming as it gives away to retain its PR. In simple terms, if your PR 4 page is getting links from a PR 8 page with 20 links leaving it, you lose out big time! It’s simple maths.

No page ever gives away all of its PR. There is a factor in Google’s calculation that reduces this to below 100% of the total PR of any page. However, that is roughly how it works. You don’t get a proportion of the whole website ranking; you only get part of the ranking of the page on which your link is placed. Since most ‘Links Pages’ tend to be full of other outgoing links, then you won’t get much, and will likely get zero.

That is why automated reciprocal linking software is often a waste of time. If you want to make the best of linking arrangements, then agree with the other webmaster that you will provide each other with a link from equally ranked pages. That way both of you will gain, and neither loses. Some software allows you to make these arrangements.

Another misconception is that only links from external web pages count. In fact, links between your own web pages can be arranged to provide one page with most of the page rank available. Every page has a start PR of 1, so the more pages you have on your site then the more PR you have to play with and distribute to pages on your website of your choice.

Search engine rank can be improved by intelligent use of links, both external and internal, but Google Page Rank does not have the profound effect on your search engine listing that many have led you to believe. Good onsite SEO usually wins so keep that in mind when designing your website.

What is the absolute best way to clean carpet? Carpet manufacturers are almost unanimous. The best way is to use hot-water extraction, also called steam cleaning. Shaw Industries, for example, which is the world's largest carpet manufacturer, recommends only hot-water extraction.

It is also recommended that you use truck-mount units, since portable machines don't have as much suction power and heat. Hot-water extraction is not the only way, though. You can dry-clean your carpet as well. A discussion of both methods follows.

Dry Cleaning Carpet

There are several variations of dry cleaning. None of these, by the way, involves rinsing your carpet when finished. One method uses a foam that dries in your carpet and then is vacuumed up. It is doubtful that all the residue can be extracted.

Another method uses a cotton bonnet that spins. This is meant to absorb the dirt in your carpet. There are some questions as to how deeply this method can clean your carpet.

Finally, there's a dry-cleaning compound that looks like wet sawdust. This is brushed into your carpet, where the dirt adheres to it. When it's dry, it is vacuumed out.

Given their doubtful effectiveness, why are these methods used? The primary reason may be that the equipment costs less. In fact, it is thousands of dollars less than hot-water extraction equipment.

Steam Cleaning Carpet

It is actually hot-water extraction, but it steams a lot. It is also the best way to clean carpet. A good truck-mount hot-water extraction unit forces very hot water into the carpet under high pressure, and then sucks it (and the dirt) out thoroughly. "Steam cleaning," as it is commonly called, has the following advantages:

- The high heat kills bacteria, fungus, mold, and dust mites, making it the healthiest way to clean carpet.

- It doesn't leave residue, if it's done correctly. Detergent residues attract dirt, which can damage carpet.

- The high pressure cleans carpet more deeply.

- The strong vacuum also cleans carpet more deeply.

- Heat really helps! Above 118 degrees fahrenheit, every 18 degrees higher changes chemical reactivity by 100%. Hot water extraction cleaning is done between 150 and 200 degrees. Is that too technical? The bottom line is that it's just the best way to clean carpet.

Buying a custom ordered product always has a small amount of risk involved. After all, most custom products require the buyer to take a leap of faith because they are going to buy something sight unseen. This does apply to custom rug making as well. You can minimize the risks by educating yourself and prepare yourself with proper planning.

Here are 8 important tips before you commit to buying:

Tip #1: Research the available custom rug fabricators in your local area or go online. Look for quality and professionalism. Do they have experience? Do they have designs to choose from? Do they have a portfolio that you can look at?

Tip #2: Identify a budget for your rug project. If your budget is tight, then maybe ordering a custom rug isn't realistic at this time. If you can afford to spend extra for something unique and custom then you may be looking at $500-1000 for smaller size rugs, $1000-5,000 for larger sizes - depending on size and complexity, costs can escalate even further as rugs get larger. If you're ordering multiple rugs then politely demand a package price discount!

Tip#3: Get design ideas online by visiting area rug sites. If you find a design that you like, then try and capture the largest image that you can. You can 'right click' the image with your mouse and 'save image as' into a folder on your desktop. Start a collection of inspiring ideas.

Tip#4: Consider how the rug will integrate into your interior. Do you have a fabric or theme that you can play from? Do you have a style that appeals to you; some current styles might be Old World, Modern, Tropical, Southwestern, Abstract, or even Whimsical.

Tip #5: Several rugs can tie-in together from room to room. They don't have to be all the same design. Consider reversing some of the colors or changing the design elements slightly. This is a great method for integrating multiple custom rugs within the home.

Tip #6: Stay clear of overly complex designs. If you want to match that busy Persian rug design in your living room, then you're better off looking for a Persian rug supplier, not a custom rug fabricator.

Tip #7: Share your favorite designs with your rug fabricator. Discuss options for integrating your ideas into your own custom rug. Ask for an estimate in writing on your proposed design. Expect to pay extra for any additional artwork that may be required.

Tip #8: Choose your colors direct from carpet swatches. It's fine to see the final artwork on your screen monitor, however, screen monitors and printouts vary. Your final decision should be based on exact materials that will be used in your rug. Have swatches shipped to you for final approval if you are ordering from a merchant online.

General rug production times should be around 4-6 weeks, depending on complexity and quantities ordered. This is an average turn around time for custom rug fabricators.

As you can see, custom rug fabrication has some interesting benefits to consider. It's not for everybody, yet the creative possibilities are endless and the interest in customizing our home interiors is more popular than ever.

Here's a quick summary of the tips: Determine a budget for your rug purchase. Integrate the designs with your existing interior. Find designs and themes that attract you. Stay clear of overly complex designs. Get an estimate of the proposed design. Choose colors from physical swatch samples.

You can be creative and you can have fun with the whole process. The key is to have a clear picture of the proposed design before buying, which is not that hard to do. The end result should be a beautiful addition to your home interior in the exact size and colors that you need.

A lot of people think that wooden floors are very noisy and cold. The cold is thought of when remembering the original wood floor boards in the house where the cold breeze from the cellar or basement void would come through. Before central heating this flooring could make the house very cold.

New floorboards are neither cold or noisy.

The flooring sold now comes tongue and grooved on all 4 sides which means the boards slot firmly together without leaving large gaps for the breeze to come through. This immediately eliminates any drafts from below the subfloor.

Even when laid directly onto joists, the insulation is very good and no cold can be felt coming through the joints.

The noise of wood floors is also minimal when fitted properly. When laminate floor had just come out this was often fitted without any or adequate underlay. This made the flooring very noisy as there was a hollow void between the existing sub floor and the new laminate floor. Due to laminate flooring also being made of hdf (high density fibreboard) rather than real wood, the noise was louder than that of real wood. It would often sound very hard and noisy with the taps of steps heard constantly.

Wood floor has more natural sound insulation and when installed properly the sound is minimal.

When using an engineered board the most common method is to float the floor by gluing the tongue and groove. As this creates a gap between the two floors it needs something in between to soak up the noise. This is where the underlay is used. The underlays range from a basic 2mm foam which can soak up the majority of the sound to the high density underlays which have been proven to have high acoustic properties and keep the noise to a minimum. Generally the price dictates the quality of the underlay but be careful to choose a wood floor underlay rather than a carpet underlay as these are not suitable for wood floors.

With solid wood floors, the boards are installed by either gluing down directly or by nailing down to the existing sub floor. Due to this, the boards do not have the void between and are therefore not noisy.

One question that we receive almost every day is whether or not the plan package for plan 1234 contains everything that a person would need to build the home in the state of "INSERT STATE / LOCATION HERE"... As such, we wanted to provide some additional information to clarify the subject.

In most areas of the country, these stock house plans will be everything you need to build, but not necessarily everything you need to obtain a building permit.

In addition to the house plans you order, you may also need a site plan that shows where the house is going to be located on the property. You might also need beams sized to accommodate roof loads specific to your region. Your home builder can usually help you with this. You may also need a septic design unless your lot is served by a sanitary sewer system. Many areas now have area-specific energy codes that also have to be followed. This normally involves filling out a simple form providing documentation that your house plans are in compliance.

In some regions, there is a second step you will need to take to insure your house plans are in compliance with local codes. Some areas of North America have very strict engineering requirements. Examples of this would be earthquake-prone areas of California and the Pacific Coast, hurricane risk areas of the Florida, Gulf & Carolina Coasts. New York, New Jersey, Nevada, and parts of Illinois require review by a local professional as well. If you are building in these areas, it is most likely you will need to hire a state licensed structural engineer to analyze the design and provide additional drawings and calculations required by your building department. If you aren’t sure, building departments typically have a handout they will give you listing all of the items they require to submit for and obtain a building permit.

Additionally, stock plans do not have a professional stamp attached. If your building department requires one, they will only accept a stamp from a professional licensed in the state where you plan to build. In this case, you will need to take your house plans to a local engineer or architect for review and stamping. In addition, plans which are used to construct homes in Nevada are required to be drawn by a licensed Nevada architect.

It is always a good idea to check with your local city, municipality, and state building authorities to ensure that your home construction will meet all applicable building codes

You can also get quality marble products from other countries, such as Mexico, the former Soviet Union, even in Spain, since these countries also have an abundance of the marble deposits.
